National Parks (3) – Shenandoah

For us, the mountains always beckon.  Standing at the mountain top and looking at the commanding landscapes as far as our eyes can see is both inspiring and humbling.  Over the weekend, we answered the call and headed to Shenandoah National Park near Front Royal, Virginia. The park lies along the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The crown jewel of Shenandoah is Skyline Drive, a 105 mile road that runs the entire length of the park with numerous overlooks for views of the surrounding mountains and rolling hills and valleys below.  Skyline Drive is especially popular during fall foliage. On the right is a picture of Skyline Drive during the fall and on the left is Mary’s Rock Tunnel on Skyline Drive.

Spring arrives much later in the mountains, at the higher elevations, the trees were barely leafing but we managed to find some blooming flowers during our hike.

The call of the mountains is irresistible and one we will answer again and again.

A few more pictures taken inside the park over the years.
